#UShine is the theme for the 2023-24 academic year at UM's Career Center. Designing media for the theme required a logo, banner, merchandise and a template among other things. After discussion with project stakeholders, we wanted the designs to have a 70s/disco feel. We wanted something nostalgic, and vibrant and energetic at the same time. I crafted up a mood-board after doing some light research:
I did more research looking at archive designs from peoplesgdarchive.org and designreviewed.com, trying to draw inspiration and incite ideas. Disco-era signage was characterized by its bold, flowing typography, vibrant colors and geometric shapes. I wanted to try out a disco ball as well, of course.
The stripes and the serif font with swashes were most popular with everyone. I started exploring more 70s color palettes and getting the weight and kerning of the typography just right. Here's the final design:
Once our logo was ready, I got to working on the merchandise - t-shirt and a tumbler. Since we were limited to only two colors for the t-shirt, I had to change the colors from the original design. We decided to use UM colors - orange and green. For the base t-shirt, we went with a classic white & black ringer shirt. It was great to see these items being used by students around campus.
We made these glossy stickers and I have one on the back of my laptop right now, and last but not least, I even made a powerpoint template to be used by staff at UM:
